My 72,000-word manuscript is double spaced in Times Roman 12-point font with one-inch margins all around.

My question is as follows: Is this much too short to be published as a novel? Writing a historical nonfiction novel is my goal. But if it’s too short, I’ll rewrite so it ends with at least 90,000 words.

I do not put upper or lower limits on book sizes, except that poetry collections should have at least 40 poems in them, and authors should be aware that an increase in word-count raises the cover-price of a book. –Anna Faktorovich, PhD, Publisher

Thank You for your quick reply! But I have one more question:

Is it important that each chapter contain the same number of pages and or word count?

For example, my first chapter runs 20 pages, but my second chapter runs only 15 pages. Word count per page ranges from 400 to 400-plus words.

If any publisher has previously told you that all chapters must have the same word-count, that publisher must have been attempting to meet a word-quota or the like. Formulaic literature does favor constant elements, including chapter length, but Anaphora is not a pop publisher, so there are no formulaic restraints. Fiction should become whatever it needs to be to tell the story in the best possible way.

            Thank You!

Because of your willingness to reply to all my questions and self-doubts, I will definitely consider sending you my manuscript in the near future.

Prior to discovering Anaphora Literary Press, I had sent my 72,000-word manuscript to a publisher. After he had it nearly three months, I received my first rejection via email.

Unfortunately, a reason was not given for the rejection. The publisher simply said he receives too many manuscripts to give a reason for rejection.

After doing research, I found that most publishers want the manuscript double spaced in Times Roman, 12-point font with an inch of space all around.

That said, I revised my manuscript to comply with this standard. I also read about including a title page, author’s name, address, word count and the like.

Now, I plan to send my manuscript to you at ALP in the very near future. I’ve read the submission guidelines and have no problem buying 40 copies of my book.

Thanks again for your response to all my questions!

Where did you find the reference to “40 copies”? I have been requiring a 50 copies purchase, or a $400 fee for around the past decade. There is a free option, but only if the quality of the work is superior. I do not offer reasons for a rejection either because most writers become very hostile when frank rejection reasons are emailed to them. I tend to respond with a “yes” or “no” on the same day when I receive a submission.

                My apologies!

Since I have spent time reading several websites (www.weekendpublisher.com, http://www.absolutewrite.com) and other websites on publishing and publishers, I may have seen 40 copies in one of those websites.

Nevertheless, I have no problem paying $400 dollars up front for publishing, and/or purchasing 50 copies if my book is accepted for publication.

Thanks again for your time and response!

Your website says you’re accepting all genres. So, I guess creative nonfiction is acceptable? How about memoirs?

Yes, “all genres” includes “memoirs”. The AbsoluteWriters thread began in 2013, or over a decade ago, (and has been locked to comments since 2018), so the references there to “40 copies” are outdated. I cite the current “50 copies” rate on the front page of Anaphora’s website.

                    That’s great! Thank you!

My novel is based on fact, so I call it creative nonfiction.

                    Thanks again!

I have lived in Annapolis for most of my life, lived on Main Street. My children played on the “hill” as Mr. Crosby did. His book has brought everything so real. It’s not just something to read about in the history books. What a wonderful way to learn history. Thank you.

    Dear Dr. Factorovich,

Do you have submission guidelines for the book publishing part of Anaphora Literary Press? I advise clients on where to send their work, and I want to add your press to my list if you are open either to queries or unsolicited manuscripts.

    Thanks,

    Dear Anna,

I would like to submit a manuscript for your review, but I don’t understand the instructions to hit “enter” after each paragraph. Does this mean to leave a space between each paragraph? Thanks,

    Chuck

      Dear Chuck:

Don’t leave spaces between paragraphs. When you reach the end of a paragraph hit “Enter” – this should take you to the next paragraph with an automatic tab – don’t tab at the beginning of the next paragraph as these tabs are a lot harder to format in InDesign and in Publisher – when I have to change the pages from a 1/2″ to a 1/4″ margin during formatting. Please send further questions about this or other matters to me by email to pennsylvaniajournal@gmail.com.

      Cheers,
